Handing off the smaller tasks that have limited affect is easy, but what about the big decisions, such as managing the project budget or hiring an outside consultant? Is that something you should delegate?

It depends. Remember, how you decide to delegate authority is different from how you decide to delegate responsibilities. And when you delegate the big decisions, you’re delegating some of your authority.

When delegating the bigger decisions, don’t be afraid—just do your homework in selecting the right delegates.

Delegating authority means you’re handing over a whole set of responsibilities. You can’t just hand that over to anyone. It has to be someone who you trust in competency and character. That is a person you know, beyond a reasonable doubt, that will think like you think, and in whom you have confidence regarding knowledge and judgment.
