All of these other people you are consulting are more than just information providers. Don’t consult with people just to say you did so, and then just do what you want. If you do that they will not help you the next time you ask.

Value what they can offer you. Apply their information and recommendations in your thinking processes as you analyze the situation and create a solution (the decision). All too often, people take the approach that they are expected to ask others advice, but then they don’t have to take it and can do what the want.

This will almost always lead to two results: first, a poor, personally motivated decision that often backfires. Second, a loss of personal credibility as those who were consulted realize their advice was solicited, but ignored.

Assignment

You’ve been here before. Remember the last time someone asked you for advice and then clearly disregarded it. Will you help them again?

When you do consult, make certain you not only use the information and recommendations, but that you tell those you consult that you will do so, and you appreciate their help.
