Change Is a Natural Catalyst for Conflict

Almost every decision will require change in some way. And change is the natural catalyst for conflict in organizations. So expect change and expect conflict.

Now we have to discuss the nature of change. As you present change to your group, your employees, or your organization, note that change—while not always good—is usually a healthy process for all organizations. After all, if Thomas Edison had not continually changed the various filaments in his light bulbs (even after his assistants suggested he was wasting his time), we may not have electric incandescent lights today.

Assignment

Review changes in organizations you have been a part of in the past. What has been the effect? How was it handled?

So keep in mind that change is usually good, but often traumatic, for organization’s and the people within them. As a result, change generates conflict. The key is to anticipate that conflict and manage it positively. Use the conflict to inform your decision making.
