Don’t Make It Personal

On the other hand, don’t make it personal when you ask people for their input. If you do, you are setting yourself up for failure. Each decision you are called upon to make should be made impartially and without your personal stake invested in the outcome.

If you make it personal, others will notice, and will not give you honest information, opinions, or feedback. They, too, are conscious of the relationship they maintain with you, and will be unwilling to damage that relationship by saying something you will react to negatively or reject.

Assignment

Do you remember when a colleague took something you said too personally? Did you mean it that way? Probably not. Remember this circumstance and let it be your guide.

If you allow this to happen, you will not get good information or recommendations, and your decision is likely to be flawed as a result. Then you really will suffer from the decision.
