Chapter 2. CODING IN ACCESS 2000 WITH VBA

IN THIS CHAPTER

As of Access 95, Microsoft added support for Visual Basic for Applications (VBA). VBA is a common programming language component shared among most of Microsoft Office, as well as Visual Basic 4 and later versions.

Because most application development involves writing code to process information, you naturally need an introduction to the vast number of features available in VBA. This information provides you with a solid foundation before you dig deeper into designing powerful applications with the help of this book.

Note

This chapter refers to the programming language features as VBA features rather than Access features. This is because the programming language within Access is a separable component. The concepts and features explained within this chapter aren't just applicable to Access, but also are available in all applications that support VBA.

In Access 2000, which uses VBA 6, the VBE (Visual Basic Editor) is even in a separate window from Access. It is now the same editor that's used in the other Office products. VBA itself is also used in third-party applications such as Visio and AutoCAD.

VBA 6 now coincides with the feature set of Visual Basic 6. One goal of Microsoft is to keep the two products in sync. Note, however, that although VBA is a component of Visual Basic, Visual Basic has many more components that make it the powerful development language that it is.
