Chapter 9. Nikon Scan

Nikon scanners include Nikon Scan software. This software will be described here as a member of the TWAIN family of drivers, which are typically included in a scanner purchase. The tight integration of Nikon Scan with the RAW editor Nikon Capture NX2 makes it especially interesting to photographers. Currently, no other program offers ease of use comparable to Nikon Scan at this level.

Installation

Nikon Scan and program updates can be downloaded from the Nikon support website free of charge. The software supports Nikon scanners only. It should be noted that the current versions no longer support all old Nikon scanners. Nikon Scan 4 is compatible with:

  • Coolscan IV + V ED

  • Super Coolscan 4000 + 5000 ED

  • Super Coolscan 8000 + 9000 ED

Nikon Scan can be used either as a fully functioning stand-alone application or as a plug-in for image editors such as Photoshop. The plug-in solution is convenient for situations in which the scanned file is processed immediately with an external image editor. However, during scanning in the plug-in mode, the editor is locked. It is better to save the image files directly to disk and edit afterwards. When Nikon Scan is run in stand-alone mode, images can be edited in parallel with Photoshop or Capture – provided there is sufficient computing power to do so.

The plug-in mode has a limitation you should know. Nikon Scan can transfer color space information to the image file only in stand-alone mode. The TWAIN interface used for Plug-in mode cannot communicate the color space of Nikon Scan to the application.
