VueScan offers genuine RAW data support and sophisticated color management at a comparatively low price. Despite its logical layout, the interface is rather plain and takes some getting used to. Image editing functions are very basic. Unlike Nikon Scan and SilverFast, VueScan is a program intended purely for scanning. In connection with a good photo editor such as Photoshop, it provides an exceptionally rich set of functions. For the technically inclined, VueScan offers a number of capabilities that are not available with Nikon Scan or SilverFast. Among the three products, VueScan provides the most inexpensive way to use the same interface for flatbed and film scanner. VueScan’s weakness lies in its filters, which are often not very powerful. Nikon Scan and Silver-Fast are both superior in this respect. Generally though, VueScan is the most comprehensive of all currently available scan software packages. For technically advanced users, it should be the first choice. No other program is comparably powerful in RAW data processing.

VueScan’s online help has come a long way, but is still not exactly user-friendly.
