THE CORE-RING APPROACH

To determine the best mix of full-time versus part-time workers, organizations are turning to the core-ring approach. As illustrated, core employees constitute the full-time, regular workforce. They are the heart of the organization and usually receive comprehensive benefits.

Part-timers, on the other hand, make up the outer ring of employees. Typically, they do not earn pensions, participate in profit-sharing plans, or receive paid vacations. Some sources estimate that more than 25 million part-timers participate in the labor force.
