APPRAISAL INSTRUMENTS

You cannot accomplish an appraisal without using a form or rating sheet that, after the interview is over, becomes a documented record. There are almost as many different appraisal instruments as there are organizations that use them. Few, if any, fully satisfy the people who designed them or the managers who use them. Almost any form, however, can be used effectively if the supervisor's attitude toward it is positive.

Two examples of appraisal instruments are provided in this chapter. Study them closely and think about how the form could serve you when appraising an employee's performance.
