EIGHT STEPS TO SUCCESS

The next time you need to concentrate on a major problem or project, follow these simple steps:

1.
Isolate yourself. Find a location where you are free from interruptions and excessive noise. Once you arrive, make yourself comfortable. Relax enough so that other matters leave your mind. You are then ready to concentrate.

2.
Review the situation. If you are concentrating with the help of a computer, bring up all facts and past history. If you are working away from a computer, have all available data with you, including printouts. Study the data.

3.
Give yourself a time limit. With full concentration, fifteen minutes is a long time. Attempt to beat the time allotments you have used in similar situations in the past.

4.
Outline what you intend to do and get started. Most people think better with a pencil in their hand.

5.
List all options. Review the various possibilities and strategies that might improve the situation or solve the problem.

6.
Weigh and decide. Thinking means tossing possibilities back and forth in your mind until you come up with the best approach or solution.

7.
Make a decision or complete the project. Whatever has required your concentration now needs to be stored in your memory bank for present implementation and future use. Concentration almost always produces something of value.

8.
When you find yourself procrastinating on an important project, take action. Organize your day to allow some period of time for the project and work on it for the entire time allotted. Just do it! “The job never started takes the longest to finish,” as they say.

The chapters ahead deal with mind-time factors that will make you an effective supervisor or team leader now and lead you in the direction of a more significant role in the future. Why not use what you have learned about concentration in this chapter to get the full meaning of the chapters that lie ahead?
