MR. X

(Note: Mr. X represents the Theory X style of leadership. Mr. X is therefore painted as authoritarian and demanding but fair. His controls are strict and definite.)

As Mr. X, you have been with the organization longer than many others, including Mr. Big. It is your opinion that employees feel more secure and produce more under a firm and predictable discipline line.

Certainly you expect some conformity and high productivity from your employees, but they always know where they stand and they respect you for it. Although you believe in control more than participative management, you respect the people who work for you and treat them as individuals.

You supervise one of the departments located next to Supervisor Joe's. The two of you must work together closely to achieve the productivity goals set by management. You feel superior to Joe for three reasons: (1) you have twenty years' more experience; (2) you helped the company through some tough times, thereby demonstrating your loyalty; and (3) you have trained many people who are now in upper management positions.

You feel that you are the supervisor best qualified to succeed Mr. Big, and you take advantage of every opportunity to demonstrate that you are ready for the job. You are rather proud that others feel you are a demanding supervisor. This reputation works for you, and management knows it. All this attention to modern psychology in order to motivate people is not your style. You have let everybody know that you think Ms. Y and Joe are too people oriented, too permissive, and too friendly with their employees. You didn't go to college but you are an avid reader, have enjoyed many management seminars, and take pride in teaching skills to those in your department.
