To illustrate how the supervisor of the future can make maximum use of the computer, all we need do is review the basic software packages currently available.
Word Processing: Word processing allows a busy supervisor to be his or her own secretary. For example, a bulletin may need to be written (with graphics), edited, and posted in a hurry. No problem with a word processor.
Spreadsheets: This software allows the supervisor to turn the computer's memory into a large worksheet in which data formulas can be tested. For example, a supervisor might want to discover what hiring a new employee might do to profitability. A few moments on the computer and the answer is on the screen.
Database Management: These programs make it possible to obtain and review information from a larger base to make comparisons.
Graphics: This capability allows a supervisor to display information in the form of charts or graphs that can be used in short departmental meetings and other forms of communication.
Networking: Programs that interface permit the transfer of data to and from other supervisors and managers. The impact of networking on interorganizational communications is already being felt.
