This mode will usually brighten the underlying image while at the same time making the colors more saturated. It's very useful because it doesn't change the darkest part of your image much, which allows you to brighten an area while still maintaining good contrast. I usually just use the Paintbrush tool and paint with a dark shade of gray on a layer set to Color Dodge mode (Figures 13.62 and 13.63). It's sometimes useful for adding more interest to otherwise dull-looking hair. (Photographers often use a separate light source just to add highlights to hair.) I often use Color Dodge mode as a replacement for Screen mode when I'm adding an outer glow Layer Style to text (see Figures 13.64 and 13.65).
