Gaussian Blur

This filter will do the opposite of what we are trying to accomplish when we sharpen an image—it makes the transitions in the image less distinct and therefore renders the image less sharp (Figures 12.7 and 12.8). This is a common method used to remove noise; however, just because it's common doesn't mean that I'm going to recommend it. There are much more sophisticated methods that won't trash the general detail in your image.
