Houses and Rooms
SEARCHING
FOR THE
BATHROOM
We must all use the bathroom for the
natural elimination of body waste.
Waste matter is a metaphor for our
psychological urine and feces: the
stored material inuencing our
responses to life. Dreams of this kind
often illustrate the need for release.
YOU FEAR EMBARRASSMENT
A dream takes you from room to room, never
nding the right door to a bathroom. Your need
is increasingly urgent, and you become
alarmed at the prospect of an embarrassing
accident on the oor. You dread the shame of
anyone witnessing the scene.
Action Be aware of your dread of shaming
yourself in public or even in front of just
one person. Cast your mind back to
childhood—were your parents likely to have
shown disgust at a dirty diaper or others’ dirt?
This often lies behind a present dread. It will
take determination, but try to accept the fact
that accidents happen.
YOU ARE ANGRY IN
YOUR SEARCH
In your dream, you are feeling very angry and
you need a bathroom, but you cannot nd one.
There is no safe place to expel your feces, so
you hold the bowel movement in while your
anger builds up to bursting point. You feel
desperate in your predicament, and your anger
seems to blur with the fury at the lack
of a suitable place.
Action Ask yourself: why do you need to hold
back your anger? Find out what it’s all about,
then decide either to release it—if it would
be helpful—or keep quiet.

Searching for the Bathroom
THE DREAM SEARCH
IS PRIMAL
The search for a bathroom is desperate: you
can’t nd one. You know it’s important, but
bewilderingly it doesn’t seem to be to relieve
your bladder. You then see a cat urinate
against a bush, marking its territory, and feel an
instinctual connection to what the cat is doing.
Action What territory do you need to mark
in your life? Is another person interested in
your partner, taking your job, or stealing your
friends? Consider how best you can protect
your interests.
CASE STUDY: AMY
Amy was a young teenager whose parents
innocently left her for a week in the care of a
close male friend, a lonely widower. The
widower was a predator. He promised Amy
gifts and kissed her inappropriately, declaring
his love for her. She was frightened of him and
his insistence that she keep their secret. She
decided to tell her parents. Sadly, both failed
to see any danger. Amy felt betrayed by all
three adults. The widower then turned his
attention to Amy’s mother, with Dad often
away on business. Fights and denials followed,
as her father became increasingly worried his
wife would leave him. He suered the rst of
three heart attacks, the last one killing him.
Amy carried her fury into middle age. One
night, she dreamed of searching for the
bathroom but not nding one. A child’s potty
appeared, and she urinated into that before
carrying it to the top of the stairs. The widower
(long deceased) was walking below in the
hall. She poured her urine satisfyingly on top
of his head. At last, all her pent-up emotions
had found release. When Amy woke, she
laughed with glee—and then wept some
necessary healing tears.
