EXPLORING ANOTHER
WORLD
Scientically absorbed, you nd yourself on a
distant planet doing research. You take
scrapings and gaze into a microscope, thrilled
at your discoveries. You call out to your
colleagues to take a look—but there’s no one
there. Alone, you’re disappointed not to be
sharing these marvels.
Action Ask yourself if you are guilty of getting
too focused on ideas, leaving everyone
behind as you race ahead. Be more aware
of when it is appropriate to include others.
Explain your behavior: no one likes to
be excluded.
OTHER
WORLDS
We are accustomed these days to talking
about other galaxies and planets. We
also read about or see documentaries on
the fascinating concept of space travel
and time jumps. The psyche has rich seams
to plunder to furnish our dream world:
great mysteries yet to be understood
but enthralling in their elusiveness.

EXOTIC COUNTRIES
BECKON
A street market abroad is the setting for your
dream; the aroma of unknown food is enticing
as you wander down a street in this sunny new
world. You observe people greeting one
another with loud, excited exclamations as
they make their purchases—quite dierent
from your hometown experience. You want to
join them but wonder if you would t into such
a dierent environment.
Action Are you tempted in reality by the idea
of living in faraway lands—the more exotic,
the better? From the doubtful note in your
dream, perhaps you’re not yet ready to
embark on such a major change. Consider
how best to prepare long term for such a
bold move. Your psyche has deliberately
given you a preview: be encouraged.
A FUTURE WORLD
In your dream, you nd yourself in a bleak
futuristic landscape. Robots are everywhere,
and you see only driverless vehicles. People
look like zombies, and the skies are full of
strange-looking craft. There is no sign of
nature anywhere.
Action There is no action to take: you have
time traveled in your dream, perhaps as a
consequence of worrying about climate
change. Enjoy what you can of the world
now—that gloomy future may not happen.
Your anxiety created this unhappy scene.
CASE STUDY: ALEX
Alex dreamed vividly of walking along a road
familiar to him in the countryside and seeing
old friends harvesting in the elds. He looked
across the rural landscape and there were
carthorses, wagons, and men and women in
18th-century clothes, scything and collecting
the corn into stacks, ready to load on the
wagons. He waved, and two men waved back.
That same dream recurred twice more, then
stopped. “It was bizarre but felt absolutely
real,” he said. “I was there in the summer
sunshine, could smell the dust from the cut
corn and hear the birds.
Weeks before his rst dream, Alex had spent
several days in the hospital with a concussion
after a fall. Had his brain been aected
enough to tune him temporarily into another
time zone? Interestingly, this is not an
unknown phenomenon. There are countless
reports of people who vividly dream of being
in another century.
