Sewing with Hooks and Eyes
Commonly used in clothing construction, hook-and-eye closures are small curved
metal fasteners with tiny loops that attach to a fabric. A hook and eye is used with
seams that meet up. A common place to use them is at the top of a zipper to hold
the open edges together.

Position the hook on the underside of the fabric,
with the top edge just at the seam edge. Stitch
the loops securely a few times, and then come up
through the fabric to the top of the hook. Sew a
loop or two to secure in place, and secure with a
knot.
Sew the eye to the adjacent side about

(.3 cm) from the edge. Sew several times around
each loop, being careful to only sew through the
top layer of fabric so the stitching isn’t visible on
the outside.
Why Choose a Hook and Bar Closure?
The bar is adjustable and can be moved in or out for a perfect fit.
It works great for seams that overlap, where a large button would
be too bulky.
A hook and bar is sturdier than a snap; it won’t pop open at
random!
It’s invisible once closed, giving a clean look to the outside of the
garment.
