Don’t hate. Life is too
short for hate.
701 Most ideas come from a desire to
express a particular emotion or concept.
This is especially true of my information
visualization work where in addition to
expressing a complex concept or set of
emotions, there is also a story to tell. In
my A_B project, for example, I’ve tried to
create an informational visualization piece
that revolves around complex personal and
collective notions of national identity and
how identity fi ts into global contributions to
peace and terror.
702 I only ever use words to sketch
an idea. I fi nd visual sketching much too
deterministic and directional—I much
more prefer generalized words and terms
that allow my imagination to be piqued and
specifi cs to be determined without visuals to
be set and therefore restricted.
703 Music: Littl’ans, Foals, The Big
Pink, Underground Resistance, The Veils,
Arvo Part. Art: Jan van Munster, Damien
Hirst, Troika, Scott King. Literature:
The
Guardian
, Baudelaire,
Les Chants de
Maldoror
, anything by Robert Fisk. Cinema:
If…, Begotten, Showgirls.
704 The mind is much more elastic
when the body is forced to use different
senses.
705 Creatives who don’t do research
are arrogant fools and rarely have anything
of value to say. Research can come from any
source—so long as it is reliable and fi lls in
the blanks of knowledge.
