Chapter 5. Color Management in Theory and Practice

An image passes through various devices on its way to final output. First the scanner reads the film into the scanner program. Then the scan is viewed on the monitor, processed in the image editor, and finally outputted on the printer. Each of these devices represents colors differently and has a different color gamut. Unintended color shifts are unavoidable without color management. This chapter explains what it takes to maintain consistent colors throughout the workflow.

Why Color Management?

A basic problem of digital image processing is that there is no absolute color definition across the entire workflow. In an ideal world, it would be possible to scan the color of the original accurately, display the scan on the monitor, and print it in true colors. Unfortunately, the current workflow cannot do that. The various links in the chain of digital processes represent colors in very different ways. This can give your image a color cast if you edit the image on an uncalibrated monitor and accidentally make modifications for what only seems to be a color cast.

Such problems can be avoided only with a solid color management system. Therefore, some basic knowledge of color models and color spaces is useful even for the photo enthusiast; for professionals, it is a must. This chapter will explore the topic of color management from the viewpoint of scanning film. Some theory will be introduced to help better understand the topic. The goal of the color management process is to interpret and reproduce colors consistently in every step of the workflow. An entirely correct representation of colors is not possible, since each device creates colors differently and therefore the color gamut of the devices used can visibly differ. It is a goal of color management to adjust the gamut as closely as possible.
