Managing Profile and Privacy Settings

With so much of your personal information being stored online, you’d be wise to take a look at the profile and privacy settings. Click Profile and privacy in the left-hand column to see the following options:

+ Search results. This is the part of your Google+ profile that appears in Google Search results when somebody searches for you online. The image to the right displays how your profile looks in Google Search (as shown in Figure 12-13).

+ Public profile information. You can edit what information is displayed on your public profile. Click Edit visibility on profile to go to your profile page in Edit mode. Chapter 2 has more information on setting up your Google+ profile.

+ See how your profile appears to other users. Type a name of a person in your Circles into the Enter a username text box and click Preview to see how your profile appears to that person.

+ Circles. Click Manage circles to go to the Circles page. Chapter 5 has more information on managing Circles.

+ Network Visibility. Click Edit network visibility. This opens the profile page in edit mode at the point where you can manage the parts of your Circles that are visible to other users.

+ Who can share posts with you. Click View incoming posts to look at the Incoming Stream.

+ Who posts are shared with. This outlines information on who posts information. You cannot adjust anything here; it merely explains the process for sharing posts with different Circles. Chapter 6 has more information on sharing posts with different Circles of people.

+ Photos. Click Edit photos settings to go to the Photos section in the Google+ settings.

+ Hangouts. This provides information on what happens when you start or join a Hangout. Nothing is editable in this section.

+ Dashboard. Click Sign into dashboard to view and manage information stored in your Google account.

+ Privacy Center. Click Go to Privacy Center for more information on Google’s products and privacy policies.

Although Google information on privacy is comprehensive, it is scattered in many different locations, and managing it effectively can be difficult. Chapter 15 has information on managing privacy in Google+ effectively.
