Other location-based game ideas

As you may have already guessed, probably in Chapter 1, Getting Started, Foody GO was a clone of a very popular game franchise that was launched dramatically last year. While the demo game was meant to show you how that popular game was constructed, hopefully it intrigued you into thinking about building your own game. Of course, you wouldn't want to copy a popular game like we did, so let's look at some other options for possible location-based games, as follows:

  • Strategy (Empire Building): Perhaps your players take the role of a king, ruler, or business mogul with the intent of building or securing the resources around them. For example, Parallel Kingdom, Parallel Mafia, Resources, and Turf Wars.
  • Paranormal (Survival): Perhaps you see your players as ghost or zombie hunters that either need to hunt the paranormal or just avoid being eaten. For example, Zombies, Run, and Spec Trek.
  • Treasure Hunting: Perhaps your players are treasure hunters who need to scavenge for clues and search out areas for hidden treasure, be it real or virtual. For example, Geocaching, Zaploot.
  • Spy (Espionage): Your players work for a secret organization and they are sent on missions around the area to discover, explore, and prevent other factions from succeeding. For example, Ingress, CodeRunner.
  • Tower Defense: Allow your players to protect areas around their neighborhood from outside virtual attacks in a real-world meets tower-defense game. For example, Geoglyph.
  • Hunting (Tracking): This is not a game for younger players. Your players play the role of hunter and hunted. The hunters must move within a specific physical distance to catch a hunted player. For example, Shift.
  • Role Play (RPG): The player takes the role of a character and can move around the real world as that character, performing virtual deeds, joining groups, and interacting with other players. For example, Kingpin: Life of Crime.
  • Collectors: This is like treasure hunting, except that players usually do something with the collected items afterwards. For example, Pokemon Go of course, it had to be on the list.

There are some great ideas in the mentioned list and there will surely be other great ideas as the location-based genre evolves. The future of the genre is a great subject for the next section of this chapter.
