Once SharePoint has been installed and a farm has been created, the next logical step is to create one or more SharePoint web applications. SharePoint web applications are specially configured ASP.NET web applications that are hosted inside Internet Information Services (IIS). These web applications expose the content found within SharePoint websites, so they are an integral part of building a SharePoint environment.
