This chapter discusses the purpose and configuration of the SharePoint 2010 User Profile service. The User Profile service is responsible for providing social networking and content targeting capabilities. Using these features, organizations can empower users to share personal information with other users in a secure and supported environment. SharePoint 2010 offers many of the same tools for exchanging informal and personal information that public sites such as Facebook and LinkedIn do and offers the added benefit of integration with team site libraries and lists as well as enterprise search results.
