A site collection is an organized hierarchy of SharePoint websites that share security, navigation, look and feel, and many other properties. A site collection is stored in a content database and is associated with a web application. Creating site collections is typically reserved for a SharePoint farm administrator, but day-to-day management of site collections is often delegated to site collection administrators. Site collection administrators are specially trained power users who are often not IT specialists.

This chapter’s focus is on the tasks that are commonly handled by the farm administrator. However, it does touch on complex site collection administrator duties as well to ensure you have a well-rounded understanding of site collections.
