Small Device, Big Impact
Some of the best presenters in the world speak at the
TED conference each year. The fascinating thing about
attending the conference is that the person sitting next
to you sometimes has as great of a story to share as the
presenters on the stage.
At one session I sat next to Scott Harrison, founder
of charity:water (www.charitywater.org). To describe
what he does, he whipped out his iPhone. He related
how he’d been a volunteer photojournalist on board the
Mercy Ship Anastasis in West Africa. When he returned
home in September 2005, he just couldn’t stomach the
thought of receiving gifts on his birthday. He realized
that he didn’t need more “stuff.” So he asked his friends
and family to give their money to help dig freshwater
wells in Africa. He then asked them to do the same thing
on their own birthdays. Three hundred birthdays later,
they’d raised $150,000.

When converting your presentation to a device like
an iPhone, be sure to simplify your content. Onscreen,
24-point type may seem big enough to you, but on the
iPhone it reduces to an unreadable 4-point type.
Interacting with Slides 245
Though the message is
the same as the Healthy
Waters case study on
pages 78 to 79, the
presentation method
differs. Neither method
is better than the
other, especially if the
outcome—safe water
for all—is the same.
Simple text and graphics are a backdrop for
the brilliant storyteller. They didn’t detract
from the power of her journey.
