The runbooks that are used in Azure Automation are written in PowerShell. PowerShell has a very rich ecosystem of modules with predefined functionalities that can be used. For using PowerShell modules from an automation account, only modules that have been uploaded to the modules section can be used. One major benefit of this is that it is possible to fix the version of a module to use. This guarantees that scripts will keep working and not break in case of updates to dependencies.

The PowerShell modules for interacting with Azure are by default installed into every automation account. Furthermore, more modules can be added, and existing modules can be upgraded or removed by administrators.
