Web content management is one of the cornerstones of SharePoint 2010 and is a feature set that distinguishes SharePoint from most other collaboration systems. Web content management systems are designed to allow users with little or no knowledge of web development to create and administer websites and web pages. While all SharePoint 2010 sites are designed to be user friendly and easy for users to manage, web content management sites make use of functionality included in the Publishing features (available in SharePoint Server 2010 Standard and Enterprise editions), which allow for greater flexibility and control over the drafting and presentation of content pages. This functionality is not available in the SharePoint Foundation 2010 product.

In this chapter we’ll explore the Publishing features and how they transform the capabilities of a SharePoint site to support web content management. We’ll also look at the templates and tools, such as page layouts and reusable content, which the Publishing features make available. You’ll learn how to configure the caching options in publishing sites to improve the performance and reduce the load time of content pages. Finally, we’ll discuss the content deployment functionality, which allows administrators to replicate entire sites and site collections of content from one SharePoint farm to another to create production sites that are separate from staging sites.
