Getting ready

In this section, we will work with the Ublox NEO-6M GPS module. The NEO-6M GPS module is a well-performing complete GPS receiver with a built-in 25 x 25 x 4 mm ceramic antenna, which provides a strong satellite search capability. It also provides the power and signal indicators to monitor the status of the module.

In general, a GPS module uses serial protocols to transmit data to a computer or a microcontroller, such as Arduino. Similarly, the Ublox NEO-6M GPS module has an interface of RS232 TTL, with a default baud-rate of 9600 bps and a power supply of 3-5 V. It is easy to connect to the computer with a USB adapter, as shown in the following photograph, where the NEO-6M GPS module is connected to the Linux system or PC with a USB cable:

Here, we will develop and configure a setup to send the positioning data collected by the NEO-6M GPS to the ROS framework running on a Linux system or PC.
