The Mecanim window

Let's take a quick overview of the Mecanim or Animator view. In order to see our Animator view, we need to click on the Window menu item and click on the Animator option; as shown in the following screenshot.

First, you will notice a large grid area. This is where the various nodes are. These are our various states or animation clips. The orange node is our default state. As this animation controller gets more and more complex, you will have arrows connecting many of these nodes together in a flow chart:

On the left-hand side of the Animation view, you will see our Parameters list, where we can set the variables we need to let our scripts transition from state to state.

The types of variables we can use are limited to floats, ints, bools, and triggers. These will be explained in a little more in detail later. For now, we will be using bools, which are variables with a true or false result.
