Why are persistent holograms necessary?

Imagine that you have this great new smart house system that uses your HoloLens to control everything. However, it is controlled with panels and other objects that you put around your home. You get home from a hard day's work and set everything up. You put your HVAC thermostat in the hallway to the bedrooms. You then set up a sprinkler system timer and put that on the wall in your garage. You keep going, and spend hours putting everything where it goes, making sure that it's all set up exactly how you like.

The next day you come home from work excited, put on your HoloLens and see that suddenly everything is gone. You walk around angrily looking for your hologram controls, and then remember that there is a voice command to find certain panels. You speak the command, and the arrow that points toward the direction appears. You walk through the house following the arrow; you pause suddenly as you realize the arrow is pointing you out the front door.

You head out the door and continue to follow the arrow to your neighbor's yard. You look up, while thinking to yourself "what is going on?" Just at that moment, you see a corner of one of your panels sticking out of the wall of your neighbor's house. Your head explodes (I'm sure I mean this figuratively...pretty sure).

In most cases, creating a consistent experience for your users will be a big part of the holographic process. So, how do we fix this problem of persistence?
