Adding the details

Now, let's make a few adjustments to our material.

First, we will change the default shader. The HoloToolkit comes with a shader designed to work better with its architecture:

  1. Click on Standard, which is at the top of the Inspector, next to the Shader heading.
  2. Scroll down and hover the mouse over HoloToolkit.
  3. When the submenu appears, click on StandardFast.

The HoloToolkit version has the same options as the Standard, though the shader itself has math that is more geared toward the HoloLens.

While this is not normally how one would use a color map, we will place a copy in the Height Map area so that we can see a bump map at work; let's perform the following steps:

  1. Click on the circle next to the Height Map:
  1. When the selected texture box opens, scroll down and search for the texture map that you are currently using for your Albedo map:
  1. Once the map is selected, a slider will appear next to the Height Map heading, adjustable from 0 to 1.
  2. If you move this slider, you will note that the texture in the Scene, on the object, deepens in accordance with the sliders. Put the slider somewhere that looks good to you.

Now that we have had a good overview of Materials, let's create another material for our second box:

  1. In the Materials folder, right-click in the empty space in the right section.
  2. Hover over Create and click on Material.
  3. Type WoodPanel for its name.
  4. Again, change its shader type to StandardFast from the HoloToolkit.
  5. Click on the circle next to Albedo.
  6. Search for and select the second texture that you chose.
  7. Again, in the Height Map section, click on the circle and choose the same texture.

It should look something like this at the moment:

Now, let's drag the texture to the other object in the Scene:

In my case, I am not a big fan of how the vertical stripes are lining up. So, I will adjust my Tiling and Offset until it fits my liking. Also, I want to play with the Height Map slider to give the crevices more depth and the smoothness slider until it looks more like wood; adjust yours according to your liking.
