QlikView converter

The QlikView converter, as its names suggests, converts QlikView application applications into Qlik Sense applications.

This very simple to use tool allows you to automatically convert most objects and scripts in a .qvw file into the Qlik Sense format. As not every object or syntax in QlikView is supported in Qlik Sense, there will be things that you will not be able to automatically convert. Using the converter is usually better than creating your application from scratch. Personally, I have used QlikView converter in several projects, and was impressed by how easy to use and straightforward it is.

To show how the converter works, I am going to use the Movies Database.qvw file that comes with any QlikView installation. The steps to convert your QlikView application into a Qlik Sense one are:

From within Dev Hub:

  1. Click on QlikView converter.
  2. Locate the .qvw file you want to convert. Drag and drop it into the main screen pane.

Once the converter is done processing the file, you will see five tabs at the top: Visualizations, Dimensions, Measures, Variables, and Unconverted objects.

By clicking on the first four tabs, you will see all the objects, dimensions, measures, and variables converted into Qlik Sense. The last tab, Unconverted objects, is a list of all the objects that exist in QlikView but are not supported in Qlik Sense, for example, Mekko charts.

All the Measures, Dimensions, and Visualizations will be available as master items in the converted application.

The following image shows a preview of what my QlikView converter screen looks like:

To finish the process and create the application, click on the Create app button at the bottom right-hand side of the screen. The application will be available in the Qlik Sense Hub.
