Understanding subscription options

Microsoft also simplified the licensing model for Dynamics 365 CE. Dynamics 365 Subscription can be purchased based on the user subscriptions shown in the following diagram:

Light User are normal users, known as team members. They have read-only access to all the apps, with read and write access to limited entities. This type of license is best suited for users who perform light tasks, such as accessing data for read-only purposes, running reports, and using the dashboard. Full User are basically Dynamics 365 CE power users, and they have full access to all the features.

Device subscription is suited for call centers where multiple users share the same devices but use their own logins. With different user subscriptions, organizations can select the Dynamics 365 subscription plan that provides the best and the most flexible options. Based on the subscription plan that is selected, users can access Dynamics 365 applications.

Based on the new licensing guide that was released on October 1, 2019, customers can purchase individual apps based on their requirements. Microsoft has divided Dynamics 365 CE apps into two categories:

  • Base: This is the main app that users need to use based on their day-to-day work. For example, for a salesperson, the Dynamics 365 CE Sales app will be a base app.
  • Attach: This is an additional app that a user requires in addition to their base app.

The following diagram provides details about the various Dynamics 365 apps categories. Here, you can see all the apps that come under the Base Apps category, as well as the apps that come under the Attach Apps category. Project Service Automation is only available as a base app and can't be purchased as an attach app:

Let's understand this using an example of a customer who wants to use Dynamics 365 CE in their two departments: sales and customer support. Here, they need to buy a Sales app for their sales department as a base app, and a Customer Service app for their customer support department as a base app. But let's say the customer support person also needs a Sales apps for some of the additional tasks they perform. In this case, they can buy a Sales app as an additional app for less. Here, the Sales app will be an attach app.
