VMware provides VDP as the backup and recovery solution for the vSphere environment, and it's managed by vSphere Web Client. However, version 6.5 has been announced as the final release of VDP and in future versions of vSphere it won't be available any longer.

How vSphere Data Protection works
VDP takes image-level backups of VM based on snapshot technology and the deduplication takes place within the appliance. VDP takes advantage of the Changed Block Tracking (CBT) technology during image-level backups to ensure that only changed blocks are copied, making the process faster and thus saving time.
The restore procedure allows you to rename VMs to restore them in different locations.
