Enterprise

Large companies are usually qualified, by their size, as enterprise or corporate. Their business needs are usually very strictly defined and almost all workloads can be really business critical, including infrastructure workloads such as the vCenter Server.

The number of workloads is usually high; that probably means more payload clusters and more attention paid to performance and scaling aspects, to adapt the infrastructure to business growth. Hybrid cloud could also be used to provide more flexibility, capacity, scaling, and so on. Also, the managed data might be very big (hundreds of TBs or PBs are becoming quite common).

These kinds of organizations have grown to the point where they need dedicated, full time IT staff with specific expertise to manage specific applications or parts of the entire infrastructure; these individuals, such as storage administrator, Windows administrator, database administrator, and so on, may work on specific technology silos, but for the infrastructure part, it is becoming more common to have cross-technology capabilities, or, at least to build a shared team of people with different competencies.
