Analysis of a Research Paper
To understand the IoT implementation strategies, we need to study a real-life example. Let’s
review a research paper “Design and Implementation of an IoT Access Point for Smart Home”
IoT_Access_Point_for_Smart_Home) to learn the challenges and strategies.

Implementing an Access Point with IoT in a Smart Home
Over the past few years, IoT has gained strong traction. This is because it oers the humanity an
opportunity to advance to the next stage in the form of convenience, automation, and intelligence.
The IoT holds the key to modify objects which were thought to be unidentifiable and give
them an identity, making them intelligent and connected to the internet on the basis of certain
communication protocols. These objects are referred to as smart objects. In IoT, wireless or
wired communication interfaces are embedded with smart objects to interact, communicate,
and “talk” with each other without relying on humans.
1
In fact, the actual IoT idea is that several smart objects are connected to each other through
a network and can have an interaction with humans on the foundation of networking technol-
ogies. These objects can forward information via the Internet for the provision of interaction
against dierent people and things. For instance, a smart power meter is used to get data about
how the energy is used in a home. Subsequently, the smart power meter forwards this data
through the wireless medium after which is it received by an access point. The data is then
passed on to other components of the ecosystem.
The IoT juggernaut has helped to create several types of applications such as intelligent
transportation, intelligence power grid, intelligent logistics, smart life, intelligent environmental
monitoring, intelligence medicine, and healthcare.
If you can imagine a smart home, many smart objects require the need of wireless com-
munication technology to connect with the mobile apps and sustain a proper living space. Till
now, an extensive list of technology have been created and integrated for multiple purposes but
most of the times these solutions leave out a formidable and robust solution, ZigBee. ZigBee is a
short-range wireless technology which is ecient in terms of deployment scalability and power
consumption. ZigBee is a wireless transmission protocol which is known to draw low power. It
oers a favorable rate for data to help with the monitoring and control purposes.
In 1998, the Honeywell Corporation created the ZigBee Alliance. The mission of the ZigBee
Alliance is to create the internet of things applications. Often, these devices are only able to con-
nect and communicate with devices that are itself embedded with any of the ZigBee module.
Some work has been done to create an ambient intelligence system in the past. Mostly, this
was done by presenting a proposal for the architecture and discussing various challenges which
can emerge while creating an internet of things ecosystem in a smart home. This chapter presents
a new approach which is borrowed from a paper “Design and Implementation of an IoT Access
Point for Smart Home” (https://www.researchgate.net/publication/287406143_Design_and_
Implementation_of_an_IoT_Access_Point_for_Smart_Home) and explains how to design and
