with IoT to serve breakfast. Likewise, the entire HVAC system can function like thermostats and
provide heating/cooling based on what suits the homeowners. Dishwashers, sump pumps, TVs,
and all the common appliances can similarly use IoT to make daily lives easier.
With its plethora of applications in so many areas, IoT seems ready to take the world to the
next level. However, it remains to be seen how well the industry progresses in the future.
WHAT IS THE FUTURE OF IoT?
The reach of the internet is growing faster than ever before. The internet is not just limited
to desktops, laptops, smartphones and tablets, new internet connected devices have been
introduced to the general public. The things you used to read on the science fiction novels are
becoming a reality now.
Yesterday’s Science Fiction is Today’s Consumer Electronic
Today, the term Internet of Things (IoT) is used to refer to various internet connected objects.
We use network sensors in various physical devices to allow for remote control and monitor-
ing. This technology is gaining massive popularity in recent times due to its flexibility in various
sectors like healthcare, banking, retail, consumer goods, manufacturing etc.
The Presence of IoT Devices
According to a report by Gartner (a global research and advisory firm), in 2017 there were
around 8.4 billion IoT connected devices in the world. However, this figure increased to 9.2
billion by 2018. They are expecting this figure to reach at least 20.8 billion devices by 2020 after
witnessing an exponential growth every year. Plus, Forrester Research has predicted that IoT will
stand as the backbone of future customer value. The IoT infrastructure will be shifting to new
specialized IoT platforms, while the developers will have a major role on platforms and initia-
tives, but security will be the main concern.
