Think of more benefits that businesses can get with IoT implementation.
IoT Implementation Challenges
IoT has come a long way. It’s been around for a while with limited functional devices. However,
recently it got attention due to various connectivity options like WIFI, 4G, Bluetooth, and so
on. In addition to this, a lot of cloud service providers started supporting IoT devices for data
exchange and analytics. This enabled various industry players to make their products available
for IoT. This progress brought some new challenges to be solved in order to have a wider scale
IoT adaptation. Following are some of the challenges;
Security: Security is one of the most important concerns in the IoT world. With the sea of
devices connecting to each other and transferring a large amount of data, security becomes the
biggest concerns. Anyone with malicious intent can alter the data in flight, which may prove
catastrophic in many industries like hospitals, airlines, etc. There is a great need to have a fully
developed security platform that provides necessary defense against commonly used security
threats like denial of service, a man in the middle attack, data tampering, and so on.
Regulatory and Legal Issues: In many sectors like banking, insurance, medical, pharmaceuti-
cal, food processing, etc. legal and regulatory requirements are mandatory to follow. There are
various laws companies must comply with like Directive 95/46/EC, CFR 21 part 11, GAMP 5,
and HIPAA. Sometimes this compliance process is tedious, which hinders time to market for
many products.
Network Latency: Network latency is the time taken for one node to transfer a bit of data and
another node to receive it. Since these networks used by IoT devices need to be optimized fur-
ther to reduce the latency, they can’t be used by mission critical sectors like security, defense, and
so on. Further improvements are needed to make sure they are useful.
Unavailability of Standardized Platform and Common Architecture: Till now there is no
standardized open collaborative platform available for all the manufacturers to oer connectiv-
ity with their devices. IoT implementations are taking place in fragments.
Scalability: This is an upcoming challenge for major IoT implementations. A lot of data is get-
ting generated through this connected architecture, which adds pressure on bandwidth. Hence,
scalability becomes an issue where the network has to extend as we add more devices to it.
Limited Types of Sensors: Although there are various dierent types of sensors available in
the market, in order to utilize the full potential of IoT there is a need to get sensors for various
dierent needs.
Power Supply: This is another limitation of devices in the IoT world. All the sensors need a
power supply in order to work. Currently they use external sources like batteries, which do not
have a long life. This adds some functional challenges, as power sources need to be replenished.
In order to make it scalable, wireless charging option can be useful or renewable energy sources
are needed.
