How IoT Is Altering IAM
The concept of IAM is being redefined by the Internet of Things. A researcher from Gartner
explained that identity and access management is on its way to become an important component
of all IoT solutions. But why is that? Gartner revealed that by 2020, there will be around 20 billion
Internet of Things devices in the world. Thus, while originally IAM was only created for employee
management, IAM can be used in the Internet of Things for the management of customers,
employees, devices, and IoT devices while at the same time it focuses on the dierences between
all of them.
Consequently, the figure of ‘identities’ is also increasing at a rapid pace. Identity and access
management are also getting more sophisticated, this means that now they do not deal with
merely a user/password combination for granting or denying access.
Identity and access management in IoT use contextual information like current time,
location of login, IP address, and operating system to create a user profile of the individual who
is requesting access. Hence, whenever an attempt of access consists of something irregular like
when an IoT device gets a login attempt at an uncommon time or if a new device is used for the
login attempt, then the identity and access management software can itself apply a restriction
on that access and searches for any possible dangers. Following are some examples of how IAM
can improve IoT for users.
Offering Convenience
With IAM, access to networks and data is much easier. For instance, password-less access can
eliminate a significant hurdle from the authentication method by identifying the location from
where a user attempted to log in and make sure if it is from an approved device or an unfamiliar
device.
Providing Customization
With the help of contextual signals, businesses can tailor digital experience in accordance with
their consumers. For instance, an airline can operate by giving distinct authentication methods
