The proposed internet of things access point oers support for Wi-Fi communications,
ZigBee communications, and other Internet features as it incorporates the conventional ZigBee
protocol and the Wi-Fi access point. As soon as an emergency scenario occurs, the IoT access
point can receive information from the ZigBee device about the competition of the wireless
resources for other Wi-Fi devices. This helps to allocate obtained resources to the ZigBee trans-
missions. As a result, the unfair priority between the Wi-Fi and ZigBee is reduced.
Interference
There is a special process which is used to prevent the wireless signals interference. The IoT
access point’s Wi-Fi interface begins by finding those channels which other access points
occupied and then informs the ZigBee device management module about it. Subsequently, an
optimal channel is picked up by the ZigBee interface for data transmissions and avoids the
starvation issue.
Costs
The energy consumption and the hardware cost can be decreased if the ZigBee hardware and
firmware are embedded with the current access point.
Nowadays a lot of research is being done to create an ambient intelligence system. This
research refers to the proposal of architecture and assesses some of the challenges that can
emerge in smart homes. In this chapter, we will go through a research paper “Design and Imple-
mentation of an IoT Access Point for Smart Home” to explain how to design and implement an
IoT Access Point which can enable wireless devices such as laptops, smartphones, and projects
to establish a connection with the internet.
Related Works
The internet of things provides support for dierent applications. Smart life is one of them that
allows providing more convenience in human lives. Literature-wise, there are many research
papers which have already discussed the IoT gateway in terms of design and implementation.
However, there is a clear dierence in many aspects between the IoT AP and the commercial IoT
gateways. To understand the distinction, read the following.
In the early literature, the home automation used three types of communication
technologies: the wireless home automation system, the wired home automation system, and
the integrated home automation system.
If we talk about the wired home automation system, then an IoT system was proposed in
Java-based home automation system” (https://ieeexplore.ieee.org/document/1309414) which
contained a home automation system and operated on the back of Java programming language.
The solution used the web service for providing the home monitoring functionality to the
electrical devices. To do this, they required the use of a computer which can act as the server,
thereby the maintenance and hardware costs increased.
Another solution was proposed in “The design and implementation of a low-cost and
programmable home automation module” (https://ieeexplore.ieee.org/document/4050050)
which was a remote system to control the temperature of water using the Internet Protocol and
the transmission of control protocol while incurring reduced costs for hardware. The issue with
the solution was that it required the installation of special software for the remote controlling
device, thereby posing an inconvenience. Furthermore, the operating method revolving around
multiple sensors simultaneously is tricky. This meant that the wired home automation system
can face certain complexities pertaining to the wire provisioning like the communication lines
