Some examples of how cryptography can help in IoT are as following.
Encrypted Communication Protocols
One of the biggest applications of cryptography in IoT is to secure the communication channels.
Communications channels in IoT such as AMQP and MQTT facilitate developers in using TLS
(transport layer security) which helps in ensuring that the data which was sent from the network
cannot be read by third parties. TLS succeeds SSL (secure sockets layer)—one of the industry
standards of websites for encryption. However, SSL has previously raised security concerns.
With TLS, it is made sure that whatever data is exchanged between two parties, it is neither
manipulated by a third party nor is it read.
Additionally, other than the encryption of the primary connections pertaining to data, it
is also necessary to apply encryption on those communications channels which are deemed
as secondary. Such channels can be used for customer features or maintenance. For example,
if a device of the Internet of Things infrastructure has a website portal for its customers, then
encryption must be implemented for the portal. Otherwise, if a hacker uses the same network,
then they attempt stealing usernames, passwords, and any data from sessions—helping them
in the impersonation of other logged users. As a result, they gain control of their victims’ device.
Ideally, you should also avoid using insecure maintenance interfaces, like that of telnet and
adopt modern and more secure solutions like SSH.
