transmitter will be held by the blind person, once they press a button on the transmitter, the
walking stick will start emitting a beeping sound.
Any normal stick could be used for this project. We will be interfacing a Raspberry Pi to the
walking stick. At the end of the stick, we will attach an Ultrasonic sensor with GPIO pins of Pi.
At the same place, we will be connecting our camera module. Both the sensors must be facing
the same direction for an accurate reading. The components must be connected with a network
to process the images in order to identify the obstacles.
Hardware Required for the Project
• Raspberry Pi for the image processing and mainboard computer,
• SD card to store data and images,
• GPS to provide active navigation to the walking stick,
• Ultrasonic sensor to detect obstacles on the go,
• RF transmitter for the blind person,
• RF receiver,
• Button switches to operate the system,
• Wi-Fi for connectivity,
• Earphones for voice commands, and
• Camera to capture images of obstacles.
Software Required for the Project
• Raspberry Jessie OS,
• Python,
• Open CV, and
• Imagga cloud.
Outcome
After using this new smart walking stick, the blind people will have the knowledge of their
surroundings in the form of voice commands. The camera and Ultrasonic sensor will become
the eyes of the blind man to gradually help him walking on his own. Automation plays a crucial
role in every technology, by processing the images with an intelligent AI; we can bring true
innovation for the blinded people.
Exercises
1. Draw flow charts, use cases, component diagrams and activity diagrams for all the
