Hardware Testing
Hardware testing is divided into the following types for wearable devices.
Wireless testing: Wireless testing focuses on the completeness, accuracy, reliability, and
speed of the data which Bluetooth, Wi-Fi, and other wireless technologies used for data
transmission of their wearable devices.
Battery lifecycle testing: This is associated with the battery lifetime and covers the
time period from the factory installation up to the entire discharge. To test the battery,
dierent device modes are used—such as airplane mode. The testing especially tests the
duration of the battery which is necessary for wearable components of shoes as it is not
possible to replace the battery in such models.
Electrical safety testing: It is executed to make sure that the user cannot be harmed with
electric burn or shocks. In the past lack of proper electrical safety testing led became the
root cause of a number of unfortunate incidents. As a consequence, companies suer
from irreparable financial and reputational damage. As wearable devices maintain direct
skin contact, therefore such precautions are necessary.
Firmware Testing
Firmware testing is mainly concerned with the wearable device’s integration of the data layer
and operating systems. Such testing includes the following.
Usability testing: It is associated with the wearable’s first-hand experience like any phys-
ical device interaction along with assessing the expectations of the user and analyzing
the actual generated results.
Compatibility testing: It is used to test the compatibility of the wearable’s platforms and
devices.
Database integrity testing: It is used for the verification of the data’s secure and proper
storage, and ensures that a system restoration or update does cannot compromise the
integrity of the data.
Security testing: It is used for the privacy and protection of the user’s information which
is stored in the data sources. It thwarts o any possible security breaches and data leaks.
External Testing
Lastly, external software integration testing is carried for wearable devices. For this stage,
the beta testing stage is executed alongside the requirements and multiple features of the
device.
Updates cover those features which have undergone compatibility testing for previous
versions; no loss of memory occurs. When bugs are identified, they are resolved quickly.
Following are some companies which are known to run wearable testing.
Athos provides smart clothing to athletes. They use a process of surface
electromyography where their testing team, both women and men, carry out the testing
for dierent physical fitness levels.
Applause introduced one of the unique and heart-warming wearable inventions. An app
which was synchronized with their wearable so it can record the daily speech of a baby
and monitor their daily growth.
