Here are 10 predictions for the future of IoT:
1. The major growth of IoT: IoT devices have a greater impact in healthcare, manufacturing
and business than our homes. New healthcare devices are being introduced every
year to save countless lives, while new IoT innovations are taking place to improve the
manufacturing process. According to a report by Intel (leading semiconductor manufac-
turing company) it is estimated that by the year 2025 the global worth of IoT industry
will reach $6.2, by receiving maximum shares from healthcare (around $2.5 trillion) and
manufacturing industry (around $2.3 trillion).
2. Self-driving and smart cars market: Smart cars are making our lives much easier by
introducing new innovative technologies to the driving experience. Perhaps everyone
is well aware of self-driving cars that will help us to avoid road accidents. According to
Nerdgraph.com, the percentage of Internet-connected cars is likely to grow from 10% in
2012 to an astonishing 90% by 2020.
3. The growth in consumer IoT: Consumer IoTs are also becoming mainstream devices
these days. The sales figures for smart home devices are proving it themselves. According
to Fool.com by 2019 around 1.9 billion smart home devices will be shipped. This equip-
ment could be worth more than $490 billion.
4. The rise in IoT clothing: Most of us are aware of wearable technologies like smart
watches and smart bands. However, soon your clothing will also be available with IoT.
This is already a reality, according to ReportBuyer 968,000 smart clothing was shipped to
the consumers in 2015 worldwide. This figure is expected to increase to 24.75 billion by
2021.
5. The rise in smart home devices: Smart home devices are gaining huge popularity in
the recent times. According to Forbes more than two-thirds of consumers will purchase
IoT devices for their house by 2019. These devices include smart bulbs, fans, thermostats,
doors, refrigerators etc.
6. The rise in smart cities: Consumers are not the only who uses IoT devices on a daily
basis. Many cities and companies also use IoT devices in various projects to improve e-
ciency and save time. In the upcoming years, more cities and companies will be adopting
IoT devices in their projects. By this, it will be possible to manage cities remotely and col-
lect data through various data.
7. The rise in cyber criminals: Back in 2016, the first malware for ”Internet of Things” was
introduced. It was malicious software which could potentially infect devices like security
cameras, DVRs etc. This malware is called “open source”, this means anyone could have
the code to modify it further. This is the indication that the future of IoT won’t be safe
from cybercriminals and malware.
8. Artificial intelligence is the next big thing: Today, we use a variety of smart cloud-
based services to save time and resources. Smart home hubs, light bulbs, thermostats,
virtual assistants collect data based on our habits of using them. When asking questions
or giving commands to a virtual assistant, it records our voice and sends it to the cloud for
machine learning. Machine learning is the process where artificial intelligence could learn
something without having to program them to do so. The biggest example is self-driving
cars which could be coming anytime sooner than you expect.
