Today, kids are often diagnosed with breathing problems. This might be the e ect of degradation
of air quality in our environment. Asthma has become one of the most frequent reasons among
kids to be absent from schools. This could be a fatal disease as it a ects the respiratory tract
and can also alter sleep patterns in an individual. It could be a major hindrance for proper child
growth.
Countries with massive industries have seen a rapid rise in asthma cases. This terrible
condition could be present between 3% and 30% of school going children aged between 6 and
7 years. The percentage of children su ering from this chronic disease was increased by 75%
between the years 1980 and 1994. And the percentage is going worst due to the increase in the
emissions created by human activities. Today, even the local authorities are unable toresolve
these kind of problems e ectively in their localities. This is mainly because there is a very limited
number of static air quality monitoring stations that would monitor the air quality. Thus, the
data gets rarely measured and it usually comes with a delay. The engineers of Airalab Rus have
a great idea of implementing a modern day automatic smart sensor in the play areas. This was
the beginning of “Smart Yard Safe Environment” project.
The proposed project consisted of a system of sensors that would be used to monitor the air
quality present in the yard. Airalab has been using blockchain technology for saving informa-
tion in a decentralized manner. This e ectively creates transparency for the state and its citizens
as now they could obtain the trusted data and use it accordingly.
On August 2018, Airalab installed a network of smart sensors on ten points of the city
Togliatti (present in Russia). The smart sensor enabled better battery life and required less exper-
tise over the hardware. The installed sensors had particle matter (PM1/ PM2.5/ PM10) and Dust
sensor. Plus, there is also an air quality sensor to detect SO
2
and NO. The data obtained from the
sensors gave a brief overview of the current air state in the city and the playground area.
Airalab aims to establish a wide network of air quality monitoring in the most important
areas (playgrounds, schools, hospitals, and nursing homes). This would greatly help the local
government to take measures in order to protect its citizens. The initiatives taken by Airalab
and its engineers are surely useful and necessary. They are also planning to go beyond, their
future plans for this project are mentioned below:
Gathering public opinion to determine the possible places for the deployment of the
sensors
Appealing to the authorities to present their point of view on the results gathered
Upgradation of the project by installing a large number of sensors, also making them
capable of online monitoring of the air quality of the entire city
This project greatly shows us the potential of using the Internet of Things for local govern-
ments to assist their citizens to attain a healthier life and establishes new markets by buying or
selling the data.
