Polibol is a prominent player in manufacturing fl exible packaging. The factory was established
in 1959 but now has over 150 employees. The company factory also enjoys the revenue of
40million Euros and has a great reputation worldwide for its technological innovations in fl ex-
ible packaging printer and converter. There are two plants of Polibol group, one is located in
Zaragoza and another is located in Madrid with huge facilities of 18,000 m
2
. The company’s
major operations deal with manufacturing aluminum laminated plastics and printed coils used
in fl exible packaging of food and consumer goods.
Polibol’s plant in Zaragoza has a speciality in technical packaging. Their 50 produced
goods get exported to North America, South America, and Europe. Having a great reputation,
the company also gets great pride in boasting its customer portfolio. The company is known for
selling and exporting to the majority of countries in the world. Polibol is also able to keep with
the production complaint with international regulatory organizations.
Project Overview
As a huge company, Polibol has to operate numerous production lines that are involved in
critical processes. For example; monitoring and controlling the air temperature close to the
machinery installed on the factory fl oor, in other cases the gas must be evaluated to maintain
compliance under authorized levels of concentration.
We must understand that packaging food is a matter of health concern and cannot play
with it. Thus, packing must fulfi ll the demands of the health legislation bodies concerning
hygiene and safety. It should also meet international standards like ISO-22000. Having com-
pliance with FDA is also important because it includes having a top-level control over quality
during the production process. Delivering the aforementioned requirements by considering
the costs is also important. Thus, manufacturing anything in the food requires the continuous
monitoring of environmental variables. This situation makes it ideal for using wireless sensor
technology.
Connecting Machines and Sensors to the Cloud
The company uses a special gateway to monitor environmental variables, critical processes
through the entire factory. These parameters could a ect working conditions and product
quality. By using the advanced sensors, Polibol is now able to monitor air temperature in the
pipes and printing machines, the light intensity on the produced products, and CO
2
levels in
the worker’s area. All of this data is monitored in real-time by using a PC, tablet, or a smart-
phone by just pairing them with an internet connection. By combining the technology of the
sensors with Microsoft’s Azure Cloud platform, Polibol is able to send sensor data directly
to the cloud servers. The data is used for further analysis and used in various applications
byPolibol.
