Python is a high-level language. It is known for its extremely fl exible and easy syntax.
The code which requires 100 lines of code in other languages can be done in 20 lines of code
in Python. Hence, in the recent times, Python has achieved quite popularity. While it is used
extensively in desktop and web development, Python emerged as a real game-changer due to
its adoption in AI/Machine Learning and IoT platforms. Hence, Python is one of the primary
options to program Pi.
For those who are unfamiliar with Scratch, it is a visual programming solution that is created
for young people. Its integration with Pi means that young aspirants can now make games and
animations without having to write complex code. Since Scratch supports GPIO, hence hardware
projects involving lights, motors, sensors, and buttons are possible to create via Scratch.
To hone their skills, the pupils are provided teaching coding lessons for every week while as
a reward; they can have fun and play with Minecraft for a day.
The Pi Effect
The introduction of Raspberry Pi marked a signifi cant change in the school. The management
managed to spark an interest in computing among pupils. As a surprisingly e ective result,
children have started to become more curious and creative and have initiated several IT related
questions to their teachers. For example, there have been questions on the reason behind slow
networking when pupils engage themselves with Pi devices while using Scratch.
Future
The management has decided to enhance all the Pi devices and purchase more Pis for the pupils.
It is expected that in the future, the number of PCs and Pi would equal, therefore allowing the
pupils to choose either one of them for their computing requirements.
CASE STUDY 2
ASSISTING THE DEMENTED PATIENTS
Introduction
Maximilian Kaiserand Oliver von Fragsteinbelong to the Hochschule Düsseldorf University of
Applied Sciences. They have been actively using Pi’s little magic to support those who have been
su ering from dementia.
In the German state North Rhine-Westphalia, the Hochschule Düsseldorf University of
Applied Sciences enjoys a good standing in the country. The university is known to o er educa-
tion to almost 10,000 students over 36 di erent degree programmes.
Fragstein and Kaiser work in the Faculty of Electrical Engineering in the areas of embedded
systems and informatics.
How Did They Use Pi?
During 2013–2014, the two individuals begin working with NutzerWelton. The project was
used to assist people su ering from dementia so their quality of life could improve. In order to
