Linking to a place in the same notebook

Linking to different places in the same OneNote 2013 notebook is a great way to get from place to place quickly. These links present an opportunity to organize your notes.

For example, you can create a page with links to other sections or pages in a notebook and use this page to quickly go to where important information is stored. You can also link to a note, which is handy if you need to go to a note on a page with many notes. You can link to a specific paragraph in a note, as well.

  1. Right-click the section tab, page tab, or note to which you want to link.

  2. On the shortcut menu that appears, click Copy Link To Section, Copy Link To Page, or Copy Link To Paragraph.

  3. Click on a page where you want the link to appear.

  4. On the ribbon, click the Home tab.

  5. In the Clipboard group, click Paste. The link is created. To activate the link, click it.

Tip

OneNote offers a shortcut for linking to a page in the currently open notebook: Type two left square brackets ([[), the page’s name, and two right square brackets (]]). For example, typing [[Compounds]] creates a link named “Compounds”; clicking this link opens the Compounds page. If OneNote can’t find a page with the name you entered, it searches other open notebooks for the page, and if OneNote can’t find the page in any open notebooks, it creates a new page and gives this page the name you entered. This is an easy way to not only create a new page, but to create a link to it at the same time.

  1. Click on a OneNote page where you want to place the link. You can select text to use as the link if you want.

  2. On the ribbon, click the Insert tab.

  3. In the Link group, click Link.

  4. In the Link dialog box, in the Or Pick A Location In OneNote list box, select the notebook to which you want to link. (To display the pages in a section, click the plus sign in front of the section name.)

  5. Click OK. The link is created. To activate the link, click it.

You can create your own link text by selecting the text that you want to use as the link before Step 4. Press Ctrl+K to make the text a hyperlink and then paste the link you copied.
