Autocorrecting common misspellings

OneNote 2013 (and all the other Office 2013 applications) have a built-in AutoCorrect feature that handles misspellings for you. For example, if you mistype the word “only” by typing “onyl,” OneNote corrects the misspelling as soon as you make it. As soon as you type o-n-y-l and press the Spacebar, OneNote corrects the error.

You can use AutoCorrect to do more than automatically correct misspellings. You can also use it to enter hard-to-type jargon, scientific terms, and the like.

Autocorrect common misspellings

  1. Click File to display the Backstage view.

  2. Click Options.

  3. Click Proofing.

  4. Click AutoCorrect Options.

  5. In the Replace text box, enter a shortcut code or the actual misspelling for a hard-to-type term, jargon, or other word.

  6. In the With text box, enter the correct spelling for the word or code you entered in step 5.

  7. Click Add.

  8. Click OK.

From that point forward, if you type the mistake or the shortcut code entered in step 5, OneNote will automatically replace it with the correction entered in step 6.

Caution

If you use AutoCorrect to enter a shortcut code for a hard-to-type term, ensure that you don’t enter characters that you might really need in the Replace text box. You could unexpectedly trigger AutoCorrect. For example, if you wanted to type cs and have OneNote replace it with cordyceps sinensis, you might want to type {cs in the Replacement text box instead of just cs. By starting AutoCorrect replacement entries with a curly bracket ({), you make it less likely to trigger AutoCorrect unexpectedly.
