Taking linked notes

Linked notes are notes that are linked to a webpage, Word document, PowerPoint presentation, or OneNote 2013 page. After you click the Link Notes button, OneNote opens a docked window; notes you take in this window are automatically linked to the webpage, Word document, PowerPoint presentation, or OneNote page that is open on your screen.

Taking linked notes is a convenient way to refer to an item about which you took notes. All you have to do to open the item is click the Internet Explorer icon, Word icon, PowerPoint icon, or OneNote icon in the note. These icons appear to the left of paragraphs in linked notes.

You can start taking linked notes in one of two ways: from within OneNote or from within Word, PowerPoint, or Internet Explorer. When you finish taking linked notes, close the docked window.

Caution

Although you can close the docked window by clicking the Link icon and choosing Stop Taking Linked Notes, the next time you dock the window, linked note-taking will not be turned on and you will need to click the Link icon and choose Start Taking Linked Notes. You can always determine if linked note-taking is turned on by looking at the Link icon. If it sports a red “do not” symbol, linked note-taking is not turned on.

Caution

When you close the docked window after taking linked notes, you exit OneNote, as well, if OneNote wasn’t open when you began taking notes. To avoid closing OneNote after you take linked notes, click the Normal View button (located at the top of the docked window) to end linked note-taking and restore the full OneNote window.
